During the worship service this morning, the text of the Parable of the Prodigal Son was read. I've read this story a lot of times over the years, as well as some books on the story. Henri Nouwen and Tim Keller both have excellent books on this story.
What stood out to me today as the line "We had to celebrate" that the father said to his elder son in describing why the festival happened after the return of his younger son.
Many things & events are celebrated today. Some are part of our annual calendar, like Christmas & New Year's Day. We celebrated my wife's birthday today, even though it nearly slipped by us due to the busyness of the past few days. Some are special events, like a wedding, a birth, a promotion, a graduation, and a retirement.
One special event that I would like to celebrate often in 2010 is the return of prodigal sons & daughters to the Father's House.
